As a donor, you may be eligible for income tax and capital gains tax relief at the applicable rate based on the value of your shares.

How can I donate my shares to MSF?

Donating shares is easier than you might think. Please find below more information on how you can donate shares to Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

For shares valued at less than £1,000

For small shareholdings, it can often cost more to move or sell them than they are worth once minimum transaction fees are taken into account.

However, these shares can be transferred to ShareGift at no cost to the shareholder.

ShareGift is an independent, registered UK charity that accepts small shareholdings, arranges to sell them and donates the proceeds to a wide range of charities, including MSF.

To get started, simply visit the ShareGift website, provide the details of the shares you wish to donate and remember to mention ‘Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders’ as your recommended charity when you make your gift.

While MSF cannot guarantee that we will receive the proceeds, ShareGift make their grants to charities based on a number of factors including donor recommendations. ShareGift will handle the valuation and the transfer of shares on your behalf.

For shares valued at more than £1,000

There are two easy options:

  • You can sell these shares and make a donation to MSF.
  • MSF can support with an Exchange of Letters (if you would like to sell your shares on MSF’s behalf). This is documentation exchanged between you and MSF as evidence that you are making a donation of shares, rather than taxable income.

If you would like to arrange an Exchange of Letters or for any questions on giving a gift of shares, please contact our Philanthropy team by emailing majorgifts@london.msf.org.

Need more information?

You can find further information on gifting shares to charity on the HMRC website. MSF is unable to provide advice on income and capital gains tax relief, and you should always consult your own financial adviser.

Thank you for considering making a donation to MSF in this way.
