Global Health Review - 18 September 2020

This week, MSF contributes to an article in Australasian Psychiatry, describing the emergence of pervasive refusal syndrome in children seeking asylum on Nauru, Australia. The authors discuss the challenges faced by clinicians in a situation where medical and legal obligations can often conflict. MSF is also mentioned in an editorial in The Lancet Child and Adolescent Health, which calls for collective international action to protect the children of Islamic State fighters from a worsening situation in Al Hol camp, Syria.

In The Lancet, a study provides global-level estimates of vaccine confidence across 149 countries between 2015 and 2019, and provides insights into worldwide variations and country-dependent factors that affect vaccine decisions. The results highlight the need for regular monitoring to detect emerging trends and prompt new approaches to build vaccine confidence.

Finally, an article in Global Public Health, co-authored by MSF, explores the association between non-partner sexual violence experience and access to toilets in young women in deprived communities of South Africa. Women using shared toilets were more likely to report experience of non-partner rape, suggesting that private, secure toilets may play a role in preventing non-partner sexual violence.
