Nigeria: Monitoring malnutrition on a smartphone

Our team in northeast Nigeria have been using an innovative system to monitor cases of malnutrition.

Using a smartphone to collect information, the team went house to house and referred malnourished children to MSF’s nutrition centres for medical care.

In neighbourhoods with a high number of cases, food distributions were organised.

The survey allowed the team access to live data, so we could monitor malnutrition and see how rates were changing in real-time.

The good news is that rates of malnutrition have now stabalised, thanks to a massive deployment of aid. While the survey has finished, our medical humanitarian programmes in Maiduguri and elsewhere in Borno State are continuing.
