In late February 2011, cartoonists Andréa Caprez and Christoph Schuler travelled to the Dagahaley refugee camp, on the Kenya-Somalia border.
This illustrated story describes the living conditions of the refugees in the camp.
Since the visit in February, the situation has deteriorated, fulfilling the worst fears expressed in their story.
The drought and fighting have forced more than 100,000 new refugees into three, already overpopulated, camps in Dadaab. The extremely difficult living conditions are continuing to worsen despite efforts to enlarge the existing camps.
In April, to respond to the influx of refugees, Médecins Sans Frontières MSF (Doctors Without Borders) opened a new health clinic in the ‘new arrival’ area. The hospital, and in particular the paediatric unit, have been expanded whilst facing the massive increase in medical needs.
Today Dadaab accomodates more than 400,000 people, making it the largest refugee camp in the world.
