‘Medicine Under Pressure’ is an in depth discussion - open to the public - on ethics of healthcare professionals in conflict situations, such as Iraq and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The event is hosted and run by Queen Mary, University of London, as part of Arts Week 2009.

Medicine Under Pressure:
Time: 6.30pm
Date: Wed 29 April
Venue: Skeel Lecture Theatre, People’s Palace, Queen Mary, University of London, Mile End Road, London, E1 4NS

Human Rights lawyer Phil Shiner, who represented Iraqi victims and their families in cases where human rights violations were committed by British occupation troops, will be talking about instances where medics working in the Iraq occupation have breached professional standards by certifying detainees fit for interrogation.

Queen Mary's bioethics expert Professor Richard Ashcroft will discuss the dual loyalties of doctors working in military service; while Dr Phoebe Okowa, also of Queen Mary's School of Law, will examine the role of medical humanitarian agencies in reporting human rights abuses in the Democratic Republic of Congo, during the conflict and its aftermath.

The event will be chaired by Malcolm Evans, Professor of Public International Law at the University of Bristol. He specialises in the international protection of Human Rights, with particular focus on the prevention of torture.
