Logisticians keep MSF’s programmes running. It's a challenging and rewarding role and you will be responsible for some or all of the following:

  • Restoring damaged hospitals
  • Setting up feeding centres
  • Organising the transport of vaccines
  • Ensuring the project’s power supply is reliable
  • Maintaining vehicles and communication systems

Logisticians also have frequent interaction with local authorities and organisations and often oversee the implementation of security protocols. Management, supervision and training of local non-medical staff is a key responsibility

Working as a logistician

MSF recruits for the following logistics roles: 

  • Supply logisticians provide support through management of supply chain, warehouse management, work alongside third party suppliers as well as the supervision and training of national staff. Read the requirements for a supply logistician.
  • Technical logistician provides technical logistical guidance to the mission through maintenance of vehicles and equipment, organising transport of goods and staff, making sure means of communication is available as well as managing local staff. Read the requirements for a technical logistician.
  • Construction logistician manages construction/rehabilitation projects by designing the project, defining all resources required (e.g. labour, budget, materials) as well as supervising the progress of the construction. Read the requirements for a construction logistician.

MSF is currently looking for logisticians with good French skills. If you speak French to a level where you can be placed in a French speaking mission such as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Chad or Central African Republic, you are much more likely to be accepted onto the MSF register. Arabic skills are also in demand.

Requirements for supply logistician

  • Significant experience in logistics related roles
  • Experience in supervising and managing others in a logistics capacity
  • Available for a minimum of nine months
  • Minimum of three months work, volunteering or travel experience in developing countries
  • Willingness to work in unstable areas
  • Adaptable and able to work in a multicultural team
  • Flexible and able to manage stress
  • Experience in supply chain management, e.g. needs assessment, order management, purchasing, stock management and freight management
  • Experience with organisation and set-up of supply administration and related supply procedures
  • Warehouse management skills
  • Familiarity with cold chain maintenance and procedures

Requirements for technical logistician

  • Significant experience in logistics related roles

  • Minimum of three months work, volunteering or travel experience in developing countries

  • Experience in preventative maintenance of equipment including vehicles, generators and other equipment used in our energy set-ups, biomedical equipment, and communication equipment (e.g. HF, VHF, Sat-phones, V-SAT, Mobile phones)
  • Experience in supervising and training staff involved in technical installation and minor repair works of generators, cabling, chargers/inverters as well as vehicle management,
  • Experience in recruitment and management of contracted daily laborers
  • Skills in management of IT equipment including provision of internet services

Requirements for construction logistician

  • Significant experience in construction related roles
  • Experience in supervising and managing others in a construction capacity
  • Available for a minimum of nine months
  • Minimum of three months work, volunteering or travel experience in developing countries
  • Willingness to work in unstable areas
  • Adaptable and able to work in a multicultural team
  • Flexible and able to manage stress
  • Experience in building design including planning of financial and human resources
  • Previous experience in analysis of construction plans and resources for the project including labour, equipment, materials, quotes and budget
  • Awareness of water and sanitation issues
  • Good negotiation skills
  • Experience of overseas building projects and experience with negotiating with local authorities is an asset

Requirements for an administrative logistician

There are rare positions available as an administrative logistician, ensuring that a project has the staff and supplies it needs, when it needs them.

Due to the high volume of applications, we have updated current essential criteria to include the ability to work in French as essential as well as having previous work experience within a humanitarian setting. 

You could be responsible for:

  • Purchase and transport of drugs and equipment (locally or internationally)
  • Planning for expected future needs and monitoring stock levels
  • Ensuring that the project functions within budget
  • Training and managing the team of locally employed staff

With the technical logistician and the project coordinator, you will probably have frequent interaction with local authorities and organisations and will be involved in the implementation of security protocols.

In some cases, the positions of technical logistician and administrative logistician are combined as all-round logistician.

Skills and expertise in the following areas:

  • Basic bookkeeping
  • HR management
  • Proven ability as a manager or team leader
  • Office and supply management experience are also desirable

Basic requirements

  • Available for a minimum of nine months
  • Previous overseas volunteer experience within a humanitarian setting
  • Ability to work in French is essential
  • Willing to work in unstable areas
  • Adaptable and able to work in a team
  • Flexible and able to manage stress
